Two deaths over the weekend
Devastating start to the year in Central Queensland resources sector
Two Central Queensland miners have died over the weekend in separate workplace incidents.
In the first incident, which occurred around 3 pm on Friday, emergency services and rescue teams were called to Coronado’s Mammoth underground coal mine following a roof collapse.
Yesterday, Queensland’s acting Mines Minister Tony Perrett said emergency responders had found the deceased worker’s body.
“One worker was safely recovered yesterday, while specialist teams worked through the night to stabilise the site and access the second individual,” Mr Perrett said.
“Tragically, that worker could not be saved.
“I want to thank the Queensland Mines Rescue Service, Queensland Police and all emergency personnel involved in the recovery operations for their professionalism and dedication under difficult and dangerous conditions.”
Meanwhile, at a small gold mine near Nebo, details are emerging around the death of a second miner following a possible rockfall.
“This is a devastating time for Queensland’s mining communities,” Mr Perret added.
“My heartfelt condolences go out to the families, friends and colleagues of both workers, and these are tragic reminders of the risks faced by those who work in our resources sector.”
A spokesperson for Queensland’s peak body for mine safety, Resources Safety and Health Queensland, said they would conduct a thorough investigation into both incidents.
A spokesperson for Mammoth Underground Mine Management said mining operations were suspended.
“We have spoken with his family to offer our sympathy and full support as they begin to come to terms with this tragic loss,” they said in a statement.
“The safety and well-being of everyone at the mine is our most important priority, and we will continue to support all Mammoth personnel who are affected by the incident.
“Mammoth Underground is providing its full support for the investigation, and mining operations will remain suspended until further notice.”
Coronado Global Resources was given the green light to commence underground mining at the Curragh complex near Blackwater in late 2024.
The Bord and Pillar operation produces around 1.5 to 2 million tonnes of coal a year and is in the north section of the Curragh open-cut mining complex near Blackwater. It is Coronado’s first underground operation in Queensland.
