The future for Glencore's Surat Hydrogen project is still being determined following the Queensland Government's decision to axe their proposed carbon capture and storage plans last week.
Through the Surat Hydrogen Project, Glencore has spent $40 million investigating the feasibility of producing blue hydrogen and ammonia by mining and processing four million tonnes of the massive Wandoan coal resource as feedstock a year
.
"We use ammonia, which is a hydrogen carrier, to economically and safely store and transport the hydrogen we have created so it can be used in Australia and exported to customers overseas," they said.
"We aim to use carbon capture and storage technology to capture the majority of total carbon dioxide emissions produced as part of the process."
